The Stages of Freelancing

Updated: Aug 29, 2023

The majority of individuals are unaware of what it takes or what it's like to operate their own freelance business. But who am I fooling, I still haven't really understood it myself. Who actually does, though?

For me to perform at my very best, having complete control and freedom to select my own projects, team, work and non-work periods, and hours is crucial. This is what you ultimately get out of freelancing, and it's what inspired me to launch my own freelancing company. The capacity for freedom. Every journey has its phases, and for someone to succeed as a remote freelancer running their own business, they must pass through four crucial phases.

1. Prospecting Unfortunately, closing sales is rarely simple; similarly, finding potential clients and interacting with them in a meaningful and NON-predatory sales-y way is actually rather difficult! Prospecting is crucial since it expands the possibilities. Consider it like this: converting a prospect to a customer takes time and might be challenging in some situations. You must start developing a sales process for potential partners from the early start and add to it frequently if you want to make the most out of your resources and sell up to your goal (and even beyond). In this situation, the best course of action to begin expanding your freelance business is to identify your target market.

On the internet, there are undoubtedly many tactics you can use to develop a sales strategy, identify your target market, and begin developing your business plan for this particular clientele. But you must have this as a cornerstone of your freelancing business.

2. Promoting Consistent marketing is necessary if you want your freelance business to succeed rather than just exist. You must continually market if you want to be able to charge prices that will make your bank account pleased. You must regularly market if you want the freedom to choose your clients and tasks. The difference between a freelancing business that makes six figures a year and one that fails due to a lack of clients or stable income is consistent marketing with a clear end goal. There are many ways for you to expand your freelance business, despite the fact that marketing can be intimidating. Let's discuss marketing and self-promotion. In actuality, many of us detest performing this. Sometimes we worry that we sound "pushy," "desperate," "sleazy," or "selling out." But if you don't let people know about your good or service, they won't be able to buy it. When you advertise your freelance business, you are letting people know that there is a fantastic shortcut out of their difficulties, and all it costs is money. There are many ways to begin promoting yourself; I won't go into depth here so you may conduct your own research and learn more. There are a few things available, though, that you can begin. These include building an online portfolio, becoming active on social media, settling on a niche, and obtaining client endorsements.

3. Networking The ability to communicate with more people in your field is always beneficial. Since possibilities can come from anyone, networking effectively will be essential to expanding your company and bringing in new customers. The act of communicating with others to share information or establish contacts—whether socially or professionally—is known as

networking. This enables you to establish and validate a reputation, your network is possibly the most crucial tool you have for finding work as a freelancer. So step beyond of your comfort zone and begin interacting with other designers, mentors, and society more generally. This will not only help you forge meaningful connections that you will cherish, but it will also give you the thrill of meeting people from all over the world who share your interests and values.

4. Thought Leadership The articulation of ideas that show your competence in a certain industry, field, or topic is known as thought leadership. Being a thought leader in your respective profession is something that many executives and business leaders aspire to. It requires commitment, tolerance, planning, and knowledge. Most thought leaders are willing to share their expertise with others in order to help a business, organization, or cause. They also have a grip on their subject matter. Successful thought leadership requires maximizing your authority and impact through content marketing, social media, and other channels. In a nutshell, thought leadership is original thinking that is informed and insightful.

These are the 4 crucial stages a freelancer goes through from start to finish. If you want to become a freelancer or already are, see that you are establishing your business foundations first and foremost through the 4 stages.
